Military Mental Health

online screening program

Website

To help those who may be struggling, the Department of Defense teamed up with the nonprofit organization, Screening for Mental Health®, to launch Military Pathways (formerly the Mental Health Self-Assessment Program®). The program is available online, over the phone, and at special events held at installations worldwide. It provides free, anonymous mental health and alcohol self-assessments for family members and service personnel in all branches including the National Guard and Reserve. The self-assessments are a series of questions that, when linked together, help create a picture of how an individual is feeling and whether they could benefit from talking to a health professional. The primary goals of the program are to reduce stigma, raise awareness about mental health, and connect those in need to available resources. The self-assessments address depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, alcohol use and bipolar disorder. After an individual completes a self-assessment, s/he is provided with referral information including services provided through the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

When a wounded vet comes home, he or she is rightly greeted with open arms. People come out of the woodwork to help. However, as weeks and months go by, the ticker tape parade ends and that help dwindles. But for our heroes, the battle at home rages on. Our heroes are struggling to regain a sense of normalcy and reintegrate into civilian life, often after suffering significant trauma. They need our continued support and need a voice to speak on their behalf about the issues they and their families still face for months and sometimes years after they come home. That is where Pros for Vets comes in.  Pros for Vets brings together professionals from all fields, including athletes, musicians, lawyers and doctors, among many others, who strive to raise awareness of the issues faced by vets and their families and to provide continued and long-term support. Our wounded warriors leave the battle zone, only to return home and continue to face an all new battle. All too often, our heroes suffer in silence, but Pros for Vets gives a voice to these heroes by raising awareness of the significant issues faced by our soldiers. Among these issues are unprecedented numbers of men and women with post-traumatic stress disorder, undiagnosed traumatic brain injuries, and substance abuse problems. Homelessness and suicides among our nation's veterans are also reaching critical levels. Pros for Vets uses the star power of the professionals involved to bring these issues to light and convince the public to take action.  In addition to raising awareness of the issues our wounded vets face, Pros for Vets also provides much needed support to vets and their families. From free legal assistance to free medical clinics, the professionals with Pros for Vets use their talents and apply the training in their respective fields to help our heroes in any way they can.
